Gum Disease Treatment

Non-Surgical Treatment – Scaling

  • If the amount of calculus is minimal and remains only above the gum line, ultrasonic scaling alone can restore healthy gums.
★ Our clinic provides a “gargle anesthetic solution,” allowing you to undergo scaling comfortably and pain-free.

Non-Surgical Treatment – Curettage (Root Planing)

  • When calculus is attached to the root surface beneath the gum line, it is removed under local anesthesia using a curette, along with any inflamed tissue.

Surgical Treatment – Gum Surgery

  • When periodontal disease has progressed chronically and cannot be managed with scaling or curettage alone, gum surgery is performed. The gums are incised to remove deeply hidden calculus.
  • If necessary, bone grafting or guided tissue regeneration may also be carried out during the procedure, depending on the bone shape around the teeth.

Surgical Treatment – Gum Grafting

  • To achieve an ideal contour for the final prosthesis, gum grafting or reshaping may be performed.
  • Even without periodontal disease, gum grafting can be done for cosmetic reasons—such as improving uneven gum height or color that affects smile esthetics.

Average Cost Estimates at Yonsei Good Day Dental Clinic

  • Scaling: KRW 60,000
  • Curettage (Periodontal Scaling & Root Planing): from KRW 60,000
  • Gum Surgery: starting from KRW 300,000 (depending on surgical complexity)

Periodontal Curettage / Root Planing

Periodontal curettage, also known as root planing, is a non-surgical treatment performed under local anesthesia. Using a specialized dental instrument called a curette, plaque, tartar (calculus), and inflamed tissue attached to the root surfaces below the gum line (inside the periodontal pocket) are carefully removed.

This procedure helps create a clean and smooth root surface, allowing the gums to heal and reattach more firmly to the teeth, which is essential for controlling periodontal disease and preventing further bone or tooth loss.

Ultrasonic Scaler

What is an Ultrasonic Scaler?
An ultrasonic scaler is a dental device that uses high-frequency vibrations combined with water spray to gently and effectively remove plaque, tartar (calculus), and bacterial biofilm from the surface of the teeth and below the gumline.

Why is this treatment effective and necessary?

  • More effective than manual tools: The ultrasonic vibrations break apart hardened tartar quickly and efficiently, reaching areas that are difficult to clean with traditional hand instruments.
  • Gentle and comfortable: The water spray cools the tip and flushes away debris, reducing discomfort and making the procedure less invasive for the patient.
  • Prevents gum disease: Regular removal of tartar and bacteria helps prevent gingivitis and periodontitis, which, if left untreated, can lead to gum recession, bone loss, and tooth loss.
  • Improves oral health and freshness: By eliminating plaque and bacteria, ultrasonic scaling not only improves gum health but also reduces bad breath and enhances overall oral hygiene.
